Tokaj
Imagine a camping place facing the river and where grey heron whiskered tern and white storks fly slowly by. This was our camping place in Tokaj. It was also a ten minute walk into Tokaj itself and the wine cellars, the only downside was the mosquitoes.
We stayed at Tisvirag Camping, the facilities were quite basic but it had a very reasonably priced restaurant and it was inexpensive to stay there.
As with many Hungarian campsites the showers lack shower heads - they obviously had them originally but somehow go missing. Without a shower head it is like showering under a very high water tap.

These signs made us laugh, presumably direct translations from Hungarian. We should not mock - our Hungarian is non existent.
As we were in one of the world's most famous wine growing areas we took a tour in the 600 year old Rakooczi wine cellar.The tours are organised and we had an English speaking guide, tours cost about £7 each and after a walk around cellar itself we drank six rather large samples, starting with a Rieslingish dry and then five progressively sweeter dessert wines. Slipped down very nicely so we bought a bottle of the dry and bottles of the sweetest and almost sweetest wines to be consumed on a special occasion.
The surprise here in Tokaj was how empty it was. It is only a small town but there are lots of restaurants and wine tasting opportunities and yet on a saturday night in June it was almost deserted.
