The Czech Republic

Introduction

Picture
The Czech Republic is the first target in our tour of central Europe in 2009.  There are plenty of campsites (many in the ACSI book) and the roads are pretty good although you have to buy a vignette as you enter the country. The cost depends on the size of the vehicle and the length of the stay, in our case as being 3.5+ tonnes and staying a month we had to pay €88 which was a bit of a shock.

The plan was to spend 3 or 4 weeks in the Czech Republic before moving on to Slovakia & Hungary. We already knew from talking to friends that there was a lot more to the country than Prague.

Although in the European Union the Czech Republic is not in the eurozone and still has the crown (Kr). Generally we found the cost of living was quite cheap – beer around a pound  a half litre and diesel less than a pound a litre. Public transport was good, efficient and cost pennies. Older Czechs speak German as a second language but younger people can often speak English.
